A few quick thoughts before I get sloppy drunk on Saturday…
St. Mary’s victories over Oregon and Seton Hall are impressive, but they were at home in their own gymnasium. This contest will be held off campus, so I don’t think they’ll have that small gym home court advantage. 6-0 doesn’t look quite impressive when you’re matched up with a 7-1 team with a SOS 100+ spots better than you. I’ll take the points here. My pre-season rankings suggest a play at home on the dog in the Valpo/Detroit game but I honestly think Valpo is the better team. The loss to Cotton was big for Detroit, and they’re still shooting the 3 ball well. They’re also one of the top teams in the nation defending the 3 and held Butler to 3 of 19 from the 3ball on Thursday. One thing to note here, how much energy did Detroit waste in the Butler game? Valpo comes in with a ton of confidence after being down w/ 2 minutes to play and win going away. I wanted to play UAB catching the points at USF, but motivation will probably play a part in a hot USF team right now. Sounds like the crowd will be a lot bigger than usual, do to a celebration for the football squad making a bowl game. The Colorado women just upset the Wyoming women. We got a revenge factor for Wyoming here, lol. In all honesty, former Wyoming Coach McClain knows more about Wyoming than anyone in the gym on Saturday. It shouldn’t matter. These two teams will bring contrasting styles to the table, and I gotta side with Ewing and the Cowboys here. Think about it. You’re the best player on the court and your former coach is coming back to your place. Not too much more to get motivated for. Can’t see Wisconsin losing. They should slow down Marquette’s tempo, especially at home. I wanted to play Fresno St., but passed considering UNLV’s SOS is about 250 spots better. Going off on a rant here, but I can get Denver season tickets for $55. That’s cheaper than my seat today at the UC, lol. I about sh*t myself when I saw NCU favored the other night, but I laid off. Not so sure I can lay off here w/ them going on the road. Go back to 2004, and I think they’ve won 2 road games. Don’t think they’ve won at Denver since 1988 or so. But, I’m laying off. Denver’s Bullock has left the team, which puts them in a serious bind. In Evansville’s two wins, they’re averaging 52 points. Austin Pee has too much offense here, bringing in 4 people in double figures. Austin Pee’s also played a SOS 100+ spots better. Evansville’s also coming off a game w/ Princeton, where this game will be a slightly different pace. Pee won here two years ago, so it’s not out of the ordinary. I think Iowa State’s a better team than Iowa all around since Johnson’s return. And I don’t need to explain the BYU play as I’ve pretty much stated my case on MSU and am currently eating crow at the moment. The other conference games are basically based on pre-season rankings stated in the Friday thread and would go into great detail if I had time but…
On the Illinois game, I think we’re in deep trouble. Yah, our record in the UC is pretty damn good, but things aren’t looking up. O’Neill who has been filling in for Olson was the former head coach at Northwestern, so he is familiar here. Pruitt sprained an ankle in practice, will play, but is not even close to 100%. Backup Center Carwell is still out 3-5 more weeks. Rodney Alexander had the flu this week, hasn’t practiced, and Meachem will start in his place, which gives Illinois a bit more offense, but really, the only thing Meachem can do is shoot (if no one is within 5 feet of him). Which, in saying all of that with everything that Arizona has had go on in the last few weeks, basically means the Illini have to rely on Frazier, Randle, and 3 other people who have little experience to score against a team that has a few more options on offense. Being an Illinois fan, depending on Randle to consistently score is something that just don’t happen. We might get a breakout game from Tisdale (kid’s a stud, just so damn skinny), but I wouldn’t count on it. I’m thrilled if we get a win, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we get straight ran outta the UC Saturday.
