Goaltending, Power Play, Penalty Killing, Defense, and Overall Team Speed are the main factors that factor into the success of an NHL Team in the new NHL. The Playoffs are a major grind for any team, Goaltending, Grit, and Special Teams are usually the factors here that win Championships. The five preceding teams are the ones that I feel right now have a good mixture of these elements and still have room to manuever under the cap. Hockey futures are not easy because injuries are frequent and the Trading Deadline can totally turn a decent team into a Playoff Dynamo.

I know there are alot of Hurricanes fans on here and I think they are a very good team but I have several question marks with them and that is why they are not on this list. Can Cam Ward duplicate his success as a Number 1 Goaltender? How will the losses of Doug Weight and Aaron Ward affect them? Nobody has been able to repeat since 1998 so how will the Canes react to having a bullseye on their chests?

Good Luck

I think SJ and Calgary are pretty strong plays.

If I had to pick one Ed it would be the Calgary Flames. The addition of Tanguay and Friesen will give them the offense they've been missing because they have the defense, goaltending, grit, and an excellent coach in Sutter. I feel they are built to win in the Playoffs.

Better value on some of these can be found at Pinnacle, so a few will be played there. Still may add a few Conference Futures and a few Point Total Futures.

Just looking back on these and right now all five that I took are in the Playoffs which is a good sign. The Flyers were tied as the third biggest favorite to win the Cup. Laugh. And no other than the Pittsburgh Penguins at +10550 are currently on a nine game unbeaten streak and playing for the fifth seed this afternoon in Montreal.

Philly is overrated every year, ecspecially this season. At least they may be able to start moving in the right direction without Bobby Clarke as the GM. Absolutely loved the guy as a player but he and Mike Milbury are two of the worst GM's that I've seen. They seem to have NO understanding of the game.

Anaheim would be fine with me I had them since September, the only teams that are high risk for me right now are Detroit and Nashville. Today's plays were to take away some of the risk on the field.

Here's how it pans out right now but depending on who is there hedging is always a good possibility.

If the Cup winner is:

The Good

Tampa Bay +27.95
Vancouver +17.65
Calgary +9.40
San Jose +9.40
Ottawa +7.60
Anaheim +5.45

Tampa disappointed me by not getting a Goaltender at the Trade Deadline so my hopes for them are a little shaky. Vancouver has Luongo and a stifling defensive system so they have a good shot. Anaheim is tough period when healthy. The Senators can score with anyone and Emery can be great at times, their defense scares me a little though. Ca;gary and San Jose are both big and physical which wears opponents down over a seven game series. The Sharks need more consistency defensively while the Flames need to learn to win on the road.

The Bad

Detroit -8.00
Nashville -8.00
Dallas or Minnesota -5.85
New Jersey or Buffalo -5.70
Any other East -4.55

Detroit and Nashville play in a cupcake division and neither team particularly scares me. Dallas and Minnesota are stifling defensive teams but lack offensive firepower. New Jersey has Brodeur which is a haunting thought but they also lack the offense. The Sabres are fast and can score but their defense is soft and the team has a ton of injuries. Whoever the others are that come in from the East, none except for possibly the Islanders with Dipietro worry me. The Pens and Thrashers lack the experience but could make some waves.

Out of Sixteen Playoff teams, I'll have Six that will turn a profit and all others are in a position where I can hedge for very minimal losses at worst. Can't ask for much more than that.

Put this up here because alot of hedging could take place as the Playoffs progress and hate bumping it every week or so. All five original picks from September are in the Playoffs so the odds are good that a few will get deep into the Playoffs.
